China 2 Abstract: Based on a physical understanding of phase noise mechanisms in CMOS LC Quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO), a quantitative analysis of phase noise in QVCO is developed. The noise of the coupling transistor is identified, and the relationship between the phase noise and the ratio of the width of coupling transistor to the width of switching transistor is analyzed. The prediction of the phase noise is in good agreement with the measurement results at 2 1/ f region. As a demonstration, a QVCO is implemented in a 0.25-um CMOS process using on-chip spiral inductors. Measurement results show that the QVCO can be tuned between 1.77 and 2.415GHz, has a phase noise of –117.17dBc/Hz at 1-MHz frequency offset for a 2.267GHz carrier, and dissipates 7.5mW from the 2.5-V power supply.

To qualify the condition of a multi standard and a multi band transceiver, a quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), which has a wide and proper tuning range, is necessary, while providing high phase noise performance and consuming low current. In this paper, a dual band quadrature VCO in 0.18 μm CMOS process is proposed. To attain the dual band operation, a reconfigureurable LC tank is...
متن کاملA Low-Phase-Noise 5GHz Quadrature CMOS VCO using Common-Mode Inductive Coupling
A new concept for quadrature coupling of LC oscillators is introduced and demonstrated on a 5GHz CMOS VCO. It uses injection-locking through commonmode inductive coupling to enforce quadrature. The technique provides quadrature over a wide tuning range without introducing any phase noiseor power consumption increase. The realized VCO is tunable between 4.6GHz and 5.2GHz and measures a phase noi...
متن کاملAn LC-VCO Strongly Suppresses the AM-FM Conversion Caused by Varactor
A differential LC-VCO that adopts a transformer with asymmetric turns-ratio has been proposed. The asymmetric turns-ratio of the transformer leads to the suppression of the AM to FM conversion which is caused by the 1/f noise of the current source transistor. The analysis of the proposed scheme and the improvement in phase noise compare to conventional CMOS LC-VCOs are described. The transforme...

This paper describes the design and optimization of voltage controlled oscillators with quadrature outputs. Systematic design of fully integrated LC-VCOs with a high inductance tank leads to a cross-coupled double core LC-VCO as the optimal solution in terms of power consumption. Futhermore, a novel fully differential frequency tuning concept is introduced to ease high integration. The concepts...

This thesis presents a backgate coupled QVCO with current reused structure, and complementary cross-coupled differential Colpitts VCO and QVCO. The formally proposed QVCO not only dissipates significantly lower power but also improves 1/ƒ close-in phase noise, compared to the conventional QVCO. For verification of the suggested idea, the proposed QVCO designed for 2 GHz operation based on a 0.1...
